Starting in 2006, residents of Cape Cod began vehemently fighting the Cape Wind project, a proposal to install an offshore wind farm in the center of the Nantucket Sound. The dispute lasted until 2017 when the lease was ultimately canceled. One of the main concerns cited by Cape residents was the “visual noise of the turbines ruining the pristine natural ocean view.”
“Cape Wind: Speculations” is a speculative kite series that draws inspiration from acceptable and often beautiful instances of breaking the ocean horizon. It pinpoints “free movement” as the key visual indicator of pleasurable instances of ocean intervention. Through form, it suggests space for turbines and its materiality and movement pattern allude to a more poetic approach to the next generation of wind design. This video is part of the larger research project and offers a high-level comparison of natural and human horizon breaking objects juxtaposed with our speculative thought starter.
